The 25th Annual Akegarasu Haya Prize Essay Contest

akegarasu haya Akegarasu Haya (1877-1954) was one of the most famous thinkers in modern Japan. He was born in Hakusan City, (in the area previously known as Matto City), Ishikawa prefecture, Japan. His wide reading of books from around the world, especially on the topics of art and philosophy, gained him a reputation as a very learned man. His works on philosophy exerted great influence on Japanese spiritual culture in the first half of the 20th century.
Hakusan City established "The Akegarasu Haya Prize" to honor his remarkable achievements, whilst aiming to foster in the youth of today that same appreciation of their own cultural traditions. These young people will become world leaders of tomorrow.
In recognizing the importance of all the different cultures around the globe, the organizers of the Akegarasu Haya Prize will accept essays from both Japan and abroad.

Application Criteria:
Section OneAn essay on philosophy or thought.
Choose one of the following topics: A treatise which will give us hope and suggestions for our future lives. A criticism on a philosopher or a thinker. A new criticism or interpretation on works of history, ethnology, or literature.
The point of the argument should be made in a creative manner with the overall structure being clear and easy to read. (Essays that are suitable for younger readers will be especially appreciated.)
Section TwoA suggestion or practical record of concrete activities which may enable young people to be raised in a sound and healthy way.
The theme of Section Two relates to the different environments in which learning occurs for young people at home, in school, at the office, in the community, or during private enterprise.
This section covers the promotions of new life-experiences, volunteer activities, international exchanges, or activities to prevent juvenile delinquency. This section also relates to vocational guidance, educational guidance, sports, and cultural activities and the rights of children.
Manuscripts:
Essays should be submitted in English or Japanese. They should consist of approximately 20 pages of double spaced A4 typescript, and a one-page summary must be included. Manuscripts should be accompanied by the applicant's personal history including age, address, telephone number, and professional and academic background.
Previously published papers will not be accepted. Any manuscripts, documents, or photographs submitted will not be returned to the author. Papers selected for publication will appear in booklet form, and the copyright will be held by Hakusan City. Please attach the pages of your essay using staples or paperclips.
Awards
*The winner of each section will be invited to attend the award-ceremony on 15 November,2009.
Section OneA prize of 500,000 yen is awarded to the best essay on the theme mentioned above.
Section TwoA prize of 300,000 yen is awarded to the best essay on the theme mentioned above.

ResultsThe award-winning manuscripts will be announced around the end of October. The award-ceremony will be held on Sunday, 15 November, 2009.
